Christmas in

Spain and Italy

Christmas is one of the most important holidays of the year, celebrated in many countries around the world. In Spain and Italy, there are some similarities, but also some differences.

Similarities

In both countries, Christmas is a religious holiday, celebrated primarily in the family circle. In the church, the Midnight Mass takes place, celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. At home, the Christmas tree is decorated and a festive meal is served.

Differences

The most important difference between Christmas in Spain and Italy is the time of the gift-giving. In Spain, the gifts are brought by the Three Kings on December 25th. In Italy, however, it is customary for children to receive their gifts from Santa Claus on December 24th.

Other differences

In Spain, it is customary for the family to come together on Christmas Eve and share the Christmas dinner together. In Italy, on the other hand, it is customary for the family to eat dinner on Christmas Eve and open presents. On December 25th, a joint lunch is then eaten.

Christmas traditions in Spain

In Spain, there are some special Christmas traditions that differ from those in other countries. For example, it is customary to watch the Christmas lottery of the National Lottery on December 22nd. The main prize of this lottery, the "El Gordo", is the world's largest lottery win.

Another Spanish Christmas tradition is the "Urn of Fate". This urn is filled with small gifts on Christmas Eve. The children then draw a lottery ticket one by one and receive the gift it contains.

Christmas traditions in Italy

Italy also has some special Christmas traditions. For example, it is customary to eat "Panettone" on December 24th. This is a traditional Italian cake made with yeast dough, raisins, and candied fruits.

Another Italian Christmas tradition is the "Befana". This is a good witch who comes to children with gifts on January 6th.

Christmas is an important holiday also for us! Wherever you are we hope that you celebrate this festivity with your friends and family. Take time to cherish this time of the year and recharge (if you like with us) for the coming 2024.
